Kenda Janet was one of 30+ who rolled out of the parking lot at Cyclist Connection, Saturday for a very good route in to the foothills of Hocking Hills. Once known to push the pace and blaze trails, now Jan-o barely hangs on but the peloton would be a poorer place without her. Poobah. Once he looked like this crossing the finishing line but now, he satisfies himself with celebrating the start, rather than the finish. Ginger made a rare appearance and I heard later bonked in Laurelville. The Polish Pony looks on too. None other then the legend, Ricky G. After finishing Mountain Mama, this 670 year old drove back to Ohio after Mama, woke up Sunday morning and rode yet another freakin 100 mile route. It's one thing to have the time but to have the time and motivation to ride centuries just about every time out is admirable....or crazy, depending on your point of view. So, we rolled out, Steve O on his Mean Machine and a bevy of Liliputions. Things sorted out within the first few miles and a core group of the usual suspects, around 12, coalesced and headed on a rolling route that did not stop in Sugar Grove but continued south to the gas station on Clear Creek Road. A couple of weeks ago, my daughter's car was rear ended by an illegal with of course, no insurance and so with her car in the shop for repairs, my family was down a car and I had to motor around today's route as quickly as I could and I skipped the stop at the gas station. Continuing on to Laurelville via multiple climbs, I kept expecting to be caught and then stopping at the gas station in L0ville, still no one caught me. I stayed on the route and upon reaching Canal Winchester, headed back out and visited..... ....the under repair bridge south of Canal before heading back to Lithopolis where I ran into Poobah. Continuing on with him and finding out what happened to everyone else, I rode back to Canal and finished with 93 miles and got back home to bring the car inventory back to 3 for a family of 4.

Canal Winchester's Sunday Morning Ride for 8/11/2013 will be heading to Somerset and back, passing through Pleasantville. The destination was requested by a young lady who rode 665 miles on the Across Ohio Bicycle Adventure (XOBA). The main route will be 66.5 miles and reach nearly 3000 feet of climbing, while the cutoff route will be 53.0 miles and top out with 1900 feet of climbing. The ride will leave at 8:00 AM from the parking lot of Cyclist Connection in Canal Winchester. If you make it out, you may catch sight of another new tandem that will start making its rounds in the Canal area. Hope to see you out there!

Nice route to Somerset! I managed to hang onto Dirty Dan and ended up with a 19.8 average and 69 miles (got a little lost). Ricky G asked me if I'd be riding with Cindy today, unfortunately that thing called work is keeping me. He said it's her last Monday off to ride. So he may be doing yet another century!

The SS Courageous set sail on its maiden voyage on the open roads. Built like a battleship, this brand new blue tandem recumbent weighs in at 49 pounds unloaded, which is about 20 pounds heavier than the Rossi tandem. Piloting this mammoth was the rookie captain Andrew C. His passenger, was none other than the young lady who rode 665 miles on XOBA, Queen Eve. With all of her luggage, multiple make-up kits, and glamour and beauty enhancing products, the bike felt like it doubled its weight. While the others sped off from the start, we moved slowly out of port, escorted by the light cruiser Dave M. Right away we ran into a small snafu and had to fix the front derailleur cable which had come loose on transport. Once fixed, we left slowly, building up to cruising speed. My impression is that a recumbent tandem is harder to control and more difficult to balance than an upright tandem, especially at stops. But it probably just takes a while to get used to. Queen Eve thoroughly enjoyed being chauffeured around. With the added on feature of an Independent Pedal System, she could coast as much as she wanted and let the captain take on the brunt of the propulsion work. One more small snafu happened on the way to Somerset with the captain getting a rock stuck in between cleat and shoe tread, preventing clipping into the pedal. Once the hills started, the work really began. Trying to move that behemoth up the hills requires monumental effort. The granny gear got a big workout! When you actually go over the top, it feels like a roller coaster letting go of the chain that pulled it up, and you start building up speed quickly. That was the most enjoyable part and I think I could actually feel Queen Eve pedaling at that point. Dave M found us a nice, small restaurant for lunch in Somerset. The local kids really enjoyed checking out the tandem and thought it looked like fun. If they only knew how much work it was....the captain was already getting a little tired out at this point. He decided he was working too hard, as evidenced by the soaking wet jersey and shorts (maybe it was just the humidity?). Dave M was very patient with us as we crawled up the hills and then occasionally blew by him on the downhills. The scenery was very nice around Somerset. We passed through a dark cloud on the way back, but only got a few drops, cooling us off for a little while. We never saw the rest of the gang, and I guess with Amanda's impressive average, I see why. Some probably took the cutoff route as well. With less than a mile to the finish, and the captain exhausted and nearly out of energy, the DQ pulled us in like a black hole. We rewarded ourselves with some divine ice cream before finishing up. 66 miles, 2900 feet of climbing, and a mind-blowing 14.8 mph average. The captain felt like he grew new muscles and is taking Monday off to recover and hopefully be able to ride Tuesday evening at Canal.
