Thursday New Albany Report--the Time Line

5/23/2013

5:15--I arrive at the parking lot.  No cars around.  Begin to feel foolish about arriving so early on an evening when clearly it is going to rain and thus no ride.
5:17--Continuing to feel odd for being the only person in the parking lot, save for a couple of teachers departing, I retreat to the rear lot by the tennis courts so I can monitor who comes (if any) to the forward lot, the normal gathering place for cyclists.
5:18--Began feeling odd that perhaps someone will think this lone guy is eyeballing the cute highschoolers so bring cell phone to my ear to act like I am taking a call.
5:19--Began thinking I probably look like a creeper eyeballing the cute highschoolers while pretending to be talking on the cell phone.  Wonder if anyone is calling the police on the creeper so drive back to the front lot and there, in white van, is Pepe LaPew, aka Kevnin H.
5:20--Paul Stock arrives but does not get out of SUV as rain begins.  Paul confirms he did leave the comment that he too slid around the Shade's floor but has better balance then Mark W and did not go down.
5:22--Farmer Mike and John Miller roll in.  They say radar looks like rain so they soon depart.
5:25--Paul Stock departs but Shannon, the supremo ride leader arrives but stays in truck.
5:35--Dirty Dan arrives in maroon van.  He has already ridden 50 miles today so riding again is not high on his list of priorities so he soon departs.
5:36--Kevin H departs.
5:38--I depart
5:41--Shannon sends out emaal saying he thinks all will blow through and ridable by 6"15.
5:41 + 1 second-- I laugh out loud at this fool's optimism.
6:15--I send Shannon an email and ask if his prediction was valid, knowing full well it could not be.
8:15--Shannon email back they rode 48 miles (off the posted route) and had some rain for last 10 miles. I feel like a creepy, foolish dumbass for not hanging around to ride.  Heck, nothing unusual about that. Wonder who all rode tonight?

There was a light rain while we gathered in the parking lot, I was surprised that more people did not bail out while waiting. I am not as good as Mark with ride reports. Maybe there were 20 people at the start and I don’t have any pictures.

John Sada made sure he had center stage before the ride, he was telling his side of the story about last Saturday’s Granville ride. I think he has been talking about it all week. He was letting everyone know how well he rode and that the other guys never had a chance with his team mates helping him. I know others are telling a different story about how they had to wait for Sada all day long, but I am not taking sides. I told John that he has one thing right, he really does, he has the right attitude. He shows up to every ride thinking (and sometimes saying) he is going to tear everyone’s legs off.

Shannon was looking at his phone and checking the weather before the ride. He called everyone over and announced that the route would head out old 161 due to the weather. We took Headleys Mill to Alward/Hollow. Then Watkins to Blacks and Canyon north to Granville. It was wet the entire ride but really started to pour on us once we started to head back from Granville.

We had Patrick W who I have not seen for a while, he was riding strong and did not seem bothered by the rain. Hendra did not ride Wednesday World this week and was making up for it. We had Dane helping to make sure there were no lulls. Chesrown was making the hills look easy. Shannon who helps to make sure we stay together and also is out front making sure that some are not able to stay with us. Will Gleason was with us all the way, we have not seen him on a Thursday ride in a while. Maybe he has been busy racing.

We had Surge in his coffee roaster kit and a tri guy with us until Canyon, the tri guy would get popped on the hills but would often catch back up. I think Canyon was too much because of the wind.

We did about 48 miles with a ~22.7 mph average.

Oh yeah, you are terrible as a ride reporter/ Geesh, you make me look like a kindergartener who failed three times and is back at it again for a fourth time. Patrick, is that Euro Patrick who rides a white bike in a white kit or someone else? Sorry I bugged out too soon.

Patrick Warren or better known on the blog as Euro Patrick, and this time the white UV guards helped to keep his arms warm. I wished that I had mine on.

Mark -

You missed a good one mark. The wind was sick on Canyon and I can't imagine riding alone in it - very thankful for the group that hung around for the ride. I was very pleased to get a snappy Thursday ride in when everyone else (JM) was at home drinking cocktails and eating potato chips.

Wait a sec...is that a shot at me, "I can't imagine riding alone in it." Seems like a subtle jab at me but maybe I'm paranoid.

I feel Mark's paranoia. Leaving work downtown and getting throught the rush hour traffic I got to New Albany exit about 5:45 and if the rain wasn't enough the black clouds and wind did me in and I pulled the plug. Lets were feeling alright even after a great time last weekend at Shannon's ironman distance weekend American Triple T in Portsmouth but I knew the effort it would take to hang on. Upon arriving home to a warm dry abode fresh from the oven french fries and Totino's pizza rolls awaited the kids made so I grabbed a few handfuls to drown the guilt of not riding :)

Marty - I am your above referenced "tri guy" - although it wasn't pretty I stayed with the group thru 27 miles and flatted - had no clue where we were - could have been Canyon, could have been Kentucky - no map (route change) and no peeps - fortunately ran into Spencer - we rode a while the wrong way - found our way back to Granville where we could figure out how to get back - ran into another guy and the 3 of us shared the rather nasty return.
Anyways, it's fun (well mostly) riding with you all and thanks for the invite Shannon.
