The B Reapers

We know who they are, the "Oh, I want to take it easy tonight so I'm going to fall back with the B group" or, "I'm tired from my wife making me do chores so I'm going to drop back and take it easy tonight." and then they drill the B group.  The B crowd, cast into the wind from merciless hill attacks by the "I'm gonna go easy tonight" guys, are grumbling.  When a ride leader calls out for the B group to depart, the usual B's that populate the B rides expect the pace to be, well you know silly them, a B pace (16-19mph avg with some regrouping). Probably is a good idea for a "Super B" group to be sent out so the guys who don't have the nerve to head out with the A group have a place and then the people who want to ride at a B pace can ride at a B pace.  Last night's B group had a 21.5 avg.  Well, more to come about the COP Canal Tuesday ride.

What about, "Gosh, I wasn't trying to drop anyone" after a pull or after the ride. Yeah right. Was Trevor the one who took the hard pull then shot out the back? Great strategy.

Lol, I was just giving Trevor the business...I am guilty, but in my defense, I did lead up Waterloo at a perfectly civilized pace and then got passed by Trevor and someone else, pulled the group to them, and then had others pass them. Passing the leader just leads to a chain reaction that leads to a nuclear meltdown....

Am I an A or a B? Sometimes it's just hard to know. I sort of got the feeling at the end of last year that I wasn't welcome in the B group, so this year I've made an effort to roll out with the A's, even though I am too slow to ride with them. I get dropped about 3-7 miles in, and if no other "slowlys" also got dropped around the same time, I get to finish the remaining 35-40 miles solo... so much for a group ride.

Just to be clear, I am in no way suggesting the A group should wait for me, I would just be an anchor and would ruin their ride. I am in favor of forming a "Super B" or "Slow A" group for all of us in-betweener types... It would make the true A group safer (less desperation-risk-taking to hold the draft, ie echeloning across the centerline, blowing stop signs, erratic surges, etc) and would allow the true B group to ride as advertised.

So for those that always get dropped by the A's and those that always seem to break-away from the B's, let's form a new group... the "A-/B+ too-slow-for-A's-too-fast-for-B's" group! Who's with me?

I think an A-/B+ group is a great idea. I'm with you.

I think it's your body odor. Talk to Kevin H, he always smells dreamy.

It seems pretty clear to those of us in the know that you are not a A rider. we can't understand why it is a mystery to you.

Gay or Straight,
I agree, it is perfectly clear to me that I am not an A rider, but for some strange reason, a few of the B's seem to disagree... maybe it actually is a body odor issue... Hey Kevin H, what's your secret? What makes you smell so dreamy?

Ryan that's odd I always thought you were welcome in the B group. There has always been two B groups it seems. One consisting of faster almost-A riders and one consisting of true B riders. Lately I cannot keep up with the faster B riders due to lack of sleep and sitting at a desk all day. Sometimes I can. Last time I rode Mark W. decided to ride with the B group and his friend joined us. His friend was really an A rider so we ended up with a crazy 20 mph average because his friend could not stop rocketing off the front. I barely kept up with them, then got dropped in the hills. I refuse to ride with the As as most are racers and they have become dangerous. Just my 2 cents..

I don't get you Mark. There is great glory in dropping off the A group and dropping all the Bs. Next week I'm dropping back to the C group and really kicking butt. I am a champion.

Now that you mention it, I think Mark may very well be part hound... like a canine, he just can't resist a chase... when there is no one to chase, he is a very sedate and congenial rider.

21.5 will get you dropped on the Thrusday night ride. 23+ is the usuall avg. I know the Canal gang is usually a little slow. They need to pick up their game.
