Steve Barbour's Passing

I apologize for the poor quality of the image (supplied by Bob Waddell) but the person on the left was Steve Barbour, dead because a dumb shit drunk, at 6:15am Saturday morning, ran him over.  Boy, what a completely senseless loss of life that literally and figuratively could have been any of us.

I have been deeply moved by this tragedy, even though I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Steve personally, and I am incredibly saddened by the burden most of you must feel. I found myself asking “Why do these terrible things happen?” Then I was reminded of a quote from C.S. Lewis as he himself was wrestling with the loss of his wife to cancer. He said that he was not “sure if God wants us to be happy”, but he thinks that “God wants us to love and be loved.” He continues by saying “We think our childish toys will bring us all the happiness there is and our nursery is the whole wide world. Something” say’s Lewis “must drive us out of the nursery and into the world of others and that something is suffering.”
In this age we call progress; we put on cars like shoes and walk faster. We form lines and remain mute, sometimes unaware of the ones around us as we transcend space. Maps hide cities, cities hide houses, houses hide faces and faces hide hearts, but hearts still beat. We try to drown them out with more accessible rhythms but our souls are still with us, and our creator waits for us to notice as our geographical boundaries are chased around the sun by time, decaying in a fashion some call normal.
Lewis also said this of friendship, “in and of itself, friendship has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which gives value to survival.” The devastation of losing a friend is great, but it will never outweigh the benefit of the friendship. As you process through your grief, I hope you recall all the miles of friendship between you and Steve.

Respectfully,

Is Steve B. the guy who only rode on the weekends, would always ride from home to the ride start, complete the entire ride, then ride back home? I find that routine to be most impressive.

I too didn't know Steve all that well either, but I do know he was a kind, considerate, safe rider. Someone that will be missed by many. To all who did know Steve well, the pain you feel is due to the great times you had with him and I'm sure you wouldn't trade those times for anything. There is now another Angel to look out for us on the road.
