Several locals are heading to New York this week for the "Gran Fondo New York", about which you can read here: http://www.granfondony.com/competition.php. Looks like a fun, yet challenging event of 110 miles and 8000+' of climbing with 4 timed climbs and prizes for top finishers. Rick Miller is taking a group, including Muscle Dude, Marty, Jon Morgan and Pete C. Rumors abound that John Sada is putting together an elite team of 4 domestiques whose purpose is to escort him around the route and finish ahead of the aforementioned "Rick's Gang". Apparently the 4 have to be super climbers and be willing to provide support as needed and in exchange, their entry fees are paid, along with food and lodging. One of the "Super 4" who have been identified is a legit Cat 2. Ought to be good stories coming out of the event which I'll do what I can to post here. Resu

This is yet another reason why some people hate cyclists......

Yep, not interested. Not interested in the Ohio one either, sounds dangerous and just another way to get people to hate us more when they are in cars.

Its not the fondo I was talking about but the noted absure self adsorbed behavior.

I don't see what the diff is, riding with 4 buddies or 4 hired guns. What makes that dangerous and why would you think riding a fondo is any more dangerous then a tour?

There was a discussion about the Ohio Gran Fondo on Cyclist Connection's page and how it uses many very busy roads. Any time you put lots of riders on busy roads people in cars are bound to be pissed off and accidents may happen. It sounded like a good time to me before I saw the discussion. To quote Frank Seebode, "the 200 route looks lethal., sure hope they require a car following the rider considering how busy the roads will be riding on...these rides are marginal to dangerous in terms of safety". So I choose to avoid this. Just my 2 cents.

Sada hires " Poohba Moto-Pace Services". That Element looks like it would make a good wind screen and Todd could gutter "Ricks Gang" when he passes them!

Most of the people traveling to New York and surely all of the “Rick’s Gang” are there to have fun, not to compete with domestique powered nut cases. Most will enjoy a nice day before the ride visiting some of the popular tourist spots and eating at some of the great restaurants. Some will probably visit Central Park and maybe even ride a loop or two around the park which is closed to car on the weekends. Hopefully the domestiques will also enjoy their stay and get a chance to see some of the city.
